Of course it is the duty of the professional musician, in time, to pass on what they themselves have had the privilege of being taught. It is also the duty of the professional musician to continue to foster their own talent, whether privately or publicly, to continue to strive towards being the best that she or he can possibly be. The balance of this dedication to teaching and of this commitment to performance is the very nature of the professional classical musician.

As an experienced concert pianist, Robin puts performance at the very heart of his teaching. The draw of live performance compels us to appreciate that our experience is not limited to the auditory, but is also visual music theatre, the presentation of art in real time and a physical circus which, as pianists are encumbered by tradition to do, is often performed without the safety-net of the musical score.

Through informal performance platforms and formal concerts and competitions both in and out of school, pupils are encouraged to become comfortable with the performing environment from the youngest age, and helped to develop an approach to their own learning which will allow their work to flourish on the concert platform, whether in exams, assessments, competitive festivals or concerts.

Currently, Robin is on the instrumental staff at George Watson’s College and St George’s School for Girls Edinburgh. He teaches all levels of pupils from the earliest beginner, through the ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall examination syllabi, to Grade 8 and Diploma standard pupils. Robin also works with University music students and adult learners. Robin is a full member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM).
