Robin Hutt has developed a reputation as a fine and versatile young musician in Scotland, the UK and abroad. He is much in demand as a recital and concerto soloist, chamber musician, orchestral pianist, composer and teacher.

Education

Born in Manchester, Robin attended the Manchester Grammar School, studying Maths, Further Maths and Physics alongside Music. He studied piano from the age of eleven with Simon Bottomley of Chetham's School of Music. Robin was awarded the Sir Thomas Beecham Instrumental Scholarship to study music at the University of Edinburgh, from where he graduated with a first class honours degree, studying with Audrey Innes. Subsequently he was awarded places at the Royal College of Music (RCM) to study piano, and at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) to study composition. Having won a Fraser Scholarship and awards from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, Robin went on to study piano with John Blakely at the RCM.

Awards

Robin was a prolific award winner in the local festival and national competition circuit, and has won prestigious prizes including the Joan Davies award in the Royal Over-Seas League Competition, two awards in the Utrecht International Piano Competition, and the Tovey Memorial Prize from the University of Edinburgh. Studies at the RCM were undertaken with a Fraser Scholarship and awards from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust.

Recitals and concerts

Robin has played in numerous venues throughout the UK, including the Royal Albert Hall and Purcell Room, and has made his concert debuts at St Martins-in-the-Fields and St James’ Piccadilly, London, and has given recitals in concert halls and cathedrals across the country. He performed regularly in the acclaimed RCM concert series both as a soloist and accompanist, and has performed regularly to critical acclaim in the Edinburgh Festival. In Edinburgh he has made his Queen’s Hall recital debut, and has appeared as a soloist with the RSNO in the Usher Hall.

Concertos and Orchestral work

Robin has worked across Scotland with the RSNO as an orchestral pianist and celeste player. He has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Scottish Sinfonia, performing the Rachmaninov-Paganini variations, and in 2005 was invited to perform extracts from the same work with the RSNO in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen. He has also made concerto appearances with University Chamber and Symphony Orchestras, with whom he has also played as timpanist and principal percussionist, his performances including the Schumann, Brahms D minor and Rachmaninov C minor piano concerti.

Teaching and Interests

Robin combines his playing with teaching work, currently at George Watson’s College and St George’s School for Girls, Edinburgh. He has also composed for Edinburgh Camerata, plays timpani and principal percussion with Edinburgh Symphony Baroque, and is a member of St Michael and All Saint's Choir. In his copious spare time, Robin has trained to be a qualified paraglider pilot, and has raised money for Macmillan Cancer Relief by running the Edinburgh Marathon.
